It’s an exciting time for Bridgestone Europe. Our 13,000 plus employees are building Bridgestone’s position in Europe. We are the global market leader in our sector and have a constantly growing market share in Europe. Europe is an important growth market for us – and of course with growth comes opportunities for our people.
Our long-term investment in Europe continues. April 2008 we opened a new fully-automated production facility at Tatabánya, Hungary. The manufacturing complex is the first in Europe to feature our fully-automated tyre manufacturing process. In Stargard, Poland, Bridgestone is also currently building a new plant (the 8th in Europe). On top of this we are enlarging our warehousing capacity and growing the number of Bridgestone owned ‘First Stop’ retail stores. In the last 10 years in Europe we have opened over 1,900 retail outlets and we will be increasing the number of company owned outlets.
These investments are important elements of our growth but so too are our investment in innovation and technologies to develop sustainable solutions that meet customers’ needs and respect the environment. For example we are making important contributions to the development of safer cars through our runflat tyres. They also reduce the weight of vehicles by removing the need to carry a fifth tyre throughout the life of the vehicle therefore reducing CO2 emissions. We continually strive for improvements and we are now leading the way in reducing rolling resistance of our tyres that will again contribute to vehicle and environmental performance.
Environmental conservation is one of the most critical issues of our time and Bridgestone Group is helping to preserve a safe environment for future generations by adopting the highest standards in environmental management as well as through collaboration with the FIA. Our “Make Cars Green” initiative in conjunction with the FIA will broaden the reach of our environmental initiatives. Our universal environmental policy, “One Team, One Planet,” aims to unite people and organizations beyond the standard corporate framework as well as to ensure the safety of the children of the world.
